Thread Whirling
WHIRLING
In thread whirling, a special tool called the whirling ring rotates at high speed around the workpiece. The whirling ring is equipped with multiple inward-facing cutting edges. These cutting edges machine the workpiece while it slowly rotates around its own axis. This forms the thread in a continuous process.
The process enables the production of trapezoidal screw drives and ball screw drives with very tight tolerances and high surface quality. Since the thread is formed in a single pass, the process is very fast and efficient.
Thread whirling can be used for a wide variety of materials and thread types, including hard and difficult-to-machine materials.
Efficient Thread Production with Precision
economical, fast, dimensionally accurate
The rotating whirling head with multiple cutting edges produces precise threads with excellent surface quality and high dimensional accuracy. The process delivers short machining times, high repeatability, and cost-effectiveness—ideal for demanding series production with the highest quality requirements.

The Process in Detail—How Thread Whirling Works

Ball Screws (KGT)
- Measurable Profile Accuracy at the Highest Level
- Precise parallelism and pitch despite high cutting depth
- Excellent Surface Quality as Standard
- Profiles individually customizable to customer requirements
- Best cost-effectiveness through optimal price-performance ratio
Trapezoidal Threads
- Effortless machining of all materials
- Perfect whirling shadows for optimal self-lubricating effect
- Outstanding precision in parallelism, pitch, and profile accuracy
Thread whirling employs a special high-performance tool called the whirling ring.
This rotates at high speed around the workpiece while the workpiece slowly rotates around its own axis.
The whirling ring is equipped with multiple inward-facing cutting edges that continuously remove material while forming the thread. This process achieves exceptional profile, pitch, and parallelism accuracy as well as excellent surface quality, even at high cutting depths.
Whirling at Kammerer
With our entry into thread skiving technology in 1970, we laid the foundation for our development in thread production. The first Waldrich skiving machine enabled us to manufacture lead screws and later ball screw spindles with high precision. In 1989, we expanded our expertise to include hard skiving—a process that allows ball raceways to be machined directly into hardened material, creating the basis for precision ball screw drives. In 1995, we modernized to CNC technology, followed in 1999 by our first major order from a renowned machine tool manufacturer.
In parallel, we established thread whirling as an important key technology. With the highest profile, pitch, and parallelism accuracy as well as excellent surface quality, it perfectly complements hard skiving and opens up additional manufacturing possibilities.
