Telescopic Thread Drive
Telescopic Thread Drive
Telescopic screw drives combine force, precision, and a space-saving design. They are used wherever a large stroke must be achieved within a limited installation space, for example in medical technology, automation, or mechanical engineering. Thanks to the telescopic principle, several spindle stages can be nested inside one another, significantly increasing the linear stroke without increasing the overall length of the drive.
Compact design meets maximum stroke length
Telescopic screw drives – precise movement in confined spaces
Telescopic screw drives are innovative linear actuators used in applications where a particularly large travel distance is required within a limited installation space. Due to their special telescopic design, multiple spindle stages can be nested together in a space-saving manner. When extending, the stages expand into a long, stable stroke system, making them ideal for applications where both compactness and freedom of movement are required.

Design and Operating Principle
A telescopic lead screw consists of several threaded spindle stages that can slide inside one another. When retracted, it forms a compact unit; when extended, the stroke length increases in proportion to the number of spindle stages.
Depending on the application, two variants are used:
- Telescopic ball screw drives for maximum precision, smooth running, and efficiency
- Telescopic trapezoidal screw drives for high load capacities and robust behavior under transverse loads
This modular design allows for application-specific adjustments regarding pitch, thread profile, and material.
Technical advantages at a glance
- Compact design with a long travel distance
- High positioning accuracy and smooth running
- Adjustable pitch and number of spindles
- Energy-efficient operation due to low friction
- Low-maintenance design for a long service life
Highlights:
- Adjustment range: 300–720 mm, effective stroke: 400 mm
- Load capacity: up to 21.6 kN static, 15.2 kN dynamic
- Positioning accuracy: ±0.1 mm
- Power transmission via steel balls
- Designed for patients up to 360 kg
Example application: Telescopic screw drive in the lifting column of an operating table
In modern operating tables, the telescopic screw drive performs the central function of height adjustment. A two-stage telescopic design with nested ball screws ensures precise, uniform movements.
Through counter-rotating threads (right-hand/left-hand threads), a synchronous, infinitely variable movement is achieved with compact dimensions and high stability.
Advantages in the application:
- Compact integration into medical lifting columns
- Precise, quiet movement for ergonomic working
- High reliability and durability in continuous operation
