This deviation is assessed using an envelope curve and defines the tolerance range within which the spindle is permitted to move. A low position variation is therefore a key characteristic of high-quality ball screws.

Precision classes according to standards

Standards such as ISO 3408 classify ball screws into various precision classes, for example C5 or C7. These classes define the maximum permissible positional deviations – often specified in micrometers per 300 mm travel or per revolution (e.g. “Variation/2π”). The higher the precision class, the smaller the permissible deviations.

Einflussfaktoren

Genauigkeit der Spindelbearbeitung

Runout and straightness tolerances

Quality of the nut and ball return system

Preset preload to reduce axial play

An optimally designed preload not only increases system rigidity, but also ensures minimal backlash during direction changes. How is positional deviation measured? Evaluation is typically carried out using high-precision measuring instruments such as laser interferometers or dial gauges, which are guided along the complete travel range. Manufacturers often specify the maximum deviation as a clear parameter, for example “0.008 mm/2π”, which describes the maximum permissible variation per revolution interval. Why low positional deviation matters Ball screws with minimal positional deviation offer significant advantages for applications where repeatability and precise positioning are critical.

Einsatzgebiete

CNC machining centers

Robot axes

Measurement and testing technology

High-precision automation systems

Choosing the appropriate tolerance class ensures that the desired accuracy is reliably achieved – a key factor in process reliability and product quality.

Ball screws are essential components in modern machinery and automation systems when it comes to precise positioning movements.
